THE TYPES OF GOLD

There exist various types of gold in the world: 9K, 14K, 18K, 19,2K, 22K, 24K, amongst others. But what do these acronyms mean? They are related to the purity of the gold, measured in karats (“K”), translating the relationship between the quantity of pure gold within a bond that also contains other metals. Pure gold is a very soft metal that is easily subject to scratching and wear. For this reason, pure gold is not used to manufacture jewelry as it would quickly become damaged. For this reason, other metals are added to the gold (copper, silver, zinc, palladium, etc.) in order to form a more resistant strand of gold.
The type of gold most utilized in the world for jewelry making is 18K Gold, which guarantees a material with a significant amount of pure gold and, at the same time, resistance to wear. In Portugal, the tradition is the use of 19,2K Gold which contains 5% more pure gold than 18K Gold. For this reason, Portuguese Gold is famous for its superior quality.
Pieces in 14K Gold or inferior, despite having an identical aspect as 18K or 19,2K jewelry, do not have a significant quantity of pure gold.
